The railway lines of London and the South East include tracks from all four of the constituent companies that made up British Railways and subsequently became the Eastern, Midland, Southern and Western regions. Each region took a separate approach when diesels and electrics replaced steam in the 1950s and 1960s.\n\nIn June 1986 Network SouthEast was launched to collectively market passenger services throughout this area, with a distinctive livery applied to locomotives, rolling stock and stations. This lasted until it was disbanded from 1 April 1994 in preparation for privatisation, since when a variety of companies have held franchises for particular areas.\n\nThis book features a selection of diesel and electric locomotives in an area of some 50-60 miles from the capital, over a period beginning in 1969. It takes the form of visiting the lines from each of the main London termini, showing a typical selection of the freight and passenger workings to be seen.

Barnsley, Rotherham and Worksop sit on top of the Midland coalfield, stretching from Nottingham into Yorkshire and the mining industry in this area once supported tens of thousands of jobs in collieries dotted across the landscape. This book is the first study to reassess the nature of the royalist cause in the North midland counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire Rutland and Staffordshire during the first civil war (1642-1646). Previous accounts of the war in the region have been heavily dependent on parliamentarian accounts, which were not written in order to create a thorough narrative of the war, but to demonise the royalists and their cause. The resultant image created by the hostile accounts was a war of confusing, rapine and disorder. Examination of a wider range of information showed that by contrast the royalists had a regional command structure which exploited thoroughly at times the resources of the region to fund their war effort. However, there were several problems within that war effort. Command was subject to internal rivalries and the interference of the king. Moreover the higher levels of command in the royalist cause created problems for the royalist commander Lord Loughborough, as his region was divided between different commanders at several points in the war. These conflicts are explored in this book.

Two large bus companies once ruled this rural part of the United Kingdom. Midland Red had the territory around Shrewsbury and Eastern Shropshire, while Crosville operated from Oswestry to Aberystwyth and all the places in between. Prior to privatisation both companies were split, with Midland Red North and Crosville Wales taking over. These eventually became part of British Bus and were later incorporated into Deutsche Bahn-owned Arriva.\n\nDespite the domination of the big boys, there has always been room for the independent sector and even today a good number of small firms running bus services can be found. Minsterley Motors, Owen's Coaches, Lloyd's of Machynlleth and Tanat Valley are just a few of the present-day operators. Names from the past include Vagg's Coaches, Mid Wales Motorways and Williamsons, plus a host of others.\n\nJohn Law has been photographing the buses of the area since the early 1970s and has built up a vast collection, the best and most interesting of which are included here. He takes us to Llanrhaedr-yn-Mochnant, Bishops Castle, Knockin Heath and Stiperstones, as well as the major towns on his journey through this fascinating area.

The last decade has seen a large number of changes on the railways in and around Birmingham. A new operator, accountable to the regional authorities, has taken over most local services from London Midland. There have been new liveries, improved stations and updated infrastructure. New trains, new stations and services are on the horizon. This book will document these changes over the mid to late 2010s and early 2020s. Stanier’s ‘Jubilee’ 5XP 4-6-0 Class served as the backbone of passenger services for the London Midland & Scottish Railway – as well as the successor London Midland Region of British Railways – for a number of years. Despite initial design flaws, the class went on to be well-liked by enginemen and enthusiasts alike.\nStanier’s Jubilees follows the career of this 191-locomotive class from their introduction in 1934 to withdrawal in 1967. A number are featured during the LMSR period, whilst many are seen during the British Railways years. The engines are featured in over 200 excellent colour and black-and-white images.\nA wide area was worked by the Jubilee Class, ranging from the West Coast Main Line to the Midland Main Line, Glasgow-Perth-Aberdeen route and cross-country from York to Liverpool, in addition to Leeds-Bristol.\nThe images included have been taken at stations, sheds, lineside and workshops. Accompanying the pictures are informative captions detailing the locomotive’s history, as well as other interesting details.\nFour locomotives were preserved following withdrawal at the end of steam and three are in steam at present. Hopefully, they will continue to be so and honour their fallen class mates, many of which are remembered here in this collection.

England's second largest county contains a wealth of railway history. The county was dominated by two companies - the Great Central in the north and the Great Northern in the centre and south. The county was also penetrated by the Midland Railway and there were no fewer than three joint lines. In the south the Midland & Great Northern Joint passed through from west to east, while the Great Northern & Great Eastern Joint ran north to south. In the far north-west of the county was the Isle of Axholme Railway, jointly owned by the North Eastern and the Lancashire & Yorkshire. The East Coast Main Line passes through the west of the county and this stretch includes the major railway centre of Grantham and Stoke Bank, where Mallard made its record-breaking run. Other important railway junctions are Sleaford, Boston, Spalding and Lincoln.\n\nOn the coast are the seaside towns of Skegness, Mablethorpe, Sutton and Cleethorpes, which in the tourist season would see the arrival by train of thousands of holidaymakers. Further north is Grimsby, which provided numerous fish trains. So important was this traffic that the Great Central had a class of engine commonly used on these trains known as 'Fish Engines'. Next comes the important port of Immingham, Britain's busiest, which sees some 240 train movements per week. On the north Lincolnshire coast is New Holland, from where the railway-owned ferry used to cross to Hull. Further west is the steel-making town of Scunthorpe, which has its own railway system and is another important customer of the railway. There were other railways too: the Immingham Electric Railway, the Alford steam tram, and the potato railways - one system of which extended to more than twenty miles. RAF Cranwell had its own branch line. There are three tourist railways, one standard gauge and two narrow gauge.\n\nUsing a wealth of rare and previously unseen photographs, Patrick Bennett documents Lincolnshire's railways.

This book provides an in-depth history of the Metropolitan-Vickers diesel-electric Type 2 locomotives, more frequently known collectively as the Co-Bo's due to their unusual wheel arrangement. Twenty locomotives were constructed during the late-1950s for use on the London Midland Region of British Railways.\n\nThe fleet was fraught with difficulties from the start, most notably due to problems with their Crossley engines, this necessitating the need for extensive rehabilitation work during the early-1960s. Matters barely improved and the option to completely re-engine the locomotives with English Electric units was debated at length, but a downturn in traffic levels ultimately resulted in their demise by the end of 1968 prior to any further major rebuilding work being carried out.\n\nSignificant quantities of new archive and personal sighting information, supported by over 180 photographs and diagrams, have been brought together to allow dramatic new insights into this enigmatic class of locomotives, including the whole debate surrounding potential re-engining, their works histories, the extended periods in storage, together with in-depth reviews of the various detail differences and liveries.

As a market town conveniently located on major transport routes, Loughborough historically has offered visitors and inhabitants a large number of drinking establishments – pubs, taverns, coaching inns, post houses, alehouses – and the town was once home to the extensive Midland Brewery Company on Derby Road, close to the canal. As the town grew rapidly during industrialisation, the demand for more inns, beerhouses and off-licences grew too and, in 1889, 264 establishments were licensed to sell beer in Loughborough. By the twenty-first century this had shrunk to around a fifth of this. In this book author Lynne Dyer surveys drinking establishments in Loughborough that were in existence immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic and those that have reopened since that time, tracing their history and fortune. Included are historic buildings such as the Loughborough Arms in Baxter Gate, originally a coaching inn on the Earl of Moira’s land known as Rose and Crown; the Royal Oak on Leicester Road, built to serve the turnpike road, which also hosted auctions and inquests; and the Paget Arms, a fine red-brick building on the corner of Paget Street and Oxford Street, built at the centre of a Victorian housing development for workers in Loughborough’s expanding industries. Strathtay Scottish was a product of the state-owned Scottish Bus Group's attempts to prepare for deregulation and possible privatisation in the mid-1980s. It combined a part of Midland Scottish, based around Perthshire, with a part of Northern Scottish based in Dundee and Angus. The Strathtay management tried to buy the company during the privatisation of the Scottish Bus Group, but was ultimately unsuccessful. The winner was the Yorkshire Traction Company based in Barnsley, and this was indeed the only case of a company not based in Scotland gaining a part of the Scottish Bus Group. Ultimately Stagecoach would force the company to abandon Perth, and eventually the Yorkshire Traction Group would itself be taken over by Stagecoach.\n\nThis is an interesting tale of expansion, contraction and ultimately oblivion, combined with some fascinating pictures.

Now preserved for almost sixty years, the former Midland Railway branch from Keighley to Oxenhope to the west of Bradford may not be one of the country’s longest – indeed it only stretches for just under five miles – but it is one of the country’s most popular preserved lines.\n\nWith a history stretching back to the mid-nineteenth century, the Keighley & Worth Valley provided an essential link for the communities that it served for almost a century. The harsh economic realities of the 1950s made its future uncertain and its fate was, theoretically, sealed before the infamous Beeching Report of March 1963.\n\nHowever, there were a number of local enthusiasts who, having previously witnessed the demise of the ex-Great Northern Railway Queensbury Triangle routes in the mid-1950s, were determined that the Oxenhope line would not suffer a similar fate.\n\nWith the line preserved, services were triumphantly restored in 1968 and the line has been providing pleasures for tourists and enthusiasts ever since.

For many long-distance rail travellers, the county of Bedfordshire is a part of the UK passed at speed on an express heading north to south on either the Midland Main Line or East Coast Main Line.
